Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. You get 4 new lessons every day for free. If you want to support my work and unlock unlimited lessons, there's an optional Supporter plan.

What if I'm a total beginner?

Lessons start with Hiragana and Katakana — the Japanese alphabet. Once you've mastered the basics, we automatically transition you into Kanji and Vocabulary.

How long does it take to reach fluency?

You can master the 2,136 Joyo Kanji in as little as 6 months (that's 12 kanji per day). The system adapts to your pace — the more you study, the faster you progress.

Can I practice writing?

Yes. You can toggle between Reading and Writing modes. Writing mode requires you to draw the Kanji from memory to pass the card.

Can I skip the basics?

Yes. If you already know some Japanese, you can select your starting level during sign-up to skip characters you've already mastered.

Can I study on mobile or tablet?

Yes. The website is fully optimised to work on mobile and tablet. You can write kanji with your finger or a stylus like an Apple Pencil.

Why is this more effective than a textbook?

The system uses Spaced Repetition (SRS) to quiz you exactly when you're about to forget. Combined with mnemonics and gamification, it's designed to be efficient and addictive.

How does this compare to other methods?
I found all alternatives had at least one major problem for me:
  • Not specifically optimised for Japanese
  • Unmaintained flash card decks with mistakes in them
  • Unnecessarily slow (e.g. messing up one card prevents you from starting the next content)
  • Not enough content to get to a truly high level (e.g. to pass the JLPT N1 exam)
  • No support for learning to write
  • Lack of gamification (e.g. level up, streaks, etc.)
  • No community element
